Independence

TrailBivvy is an independent app. It is not affiliated with, endorsed or sponsored by any trail association, tourism organisation, land manager or authority. This includes Via Alpina and CIPRA International; FFRandonnée, the Pacific Crest Trail Association, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, the Continental Divide Trail Coalition and Tirol Werbung; SwitzerlandMobility; OpenStreetMap and the OpenStreetMap Foundation; swisstopo, the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN/BAFU), IGN, basemap.at, BKG, IGN España, Kartverket and USGS; MeteoSwiss and Open-Meteo; any national park service; and Apple.

In France, GR® is a registered trademark of the Fédération française de la randonnée pédestre (FFRandonnée). Trail names such as “Via Alpina”, and all other trail and product names, belong to their owners and are used only to identify the routes and services. TrailBivvy uses no third-party logos.

Apple, iPhone, iCloud and Apple Watch are trademarks of Apple Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries and regions; App Store is a service mark of Apple Inc.

Important notice

TrailBivvy does not replace a map, a compass, proper equipment, official warnings or local rules. Mountain conditions change quickly: weather and hazards always come before your plans. TrailBivvy never states that a place is legal, allowed or safe for an overnight stay; signs, local rules and landowners have the final word.

The data in the app can be incomplete, approximate or out of date. Catalogue trails come from OpenStreetMap and are not officially surveyed. The Via Alpina route in the app is synthetic demo data and must not be used for navigation.

Map and data credits

The app lists these credits on its Sources screen and shows a short credit for the map in use on the map. The licence terms of every source are being reviewed before release.

Trails and points of interest

OpenStreetMap — trail routes, huts, water points and places: “© OpenStreetMap contributors”, available under the Open Database License (ODbL 1.0). See openstreetmap.org/copyright. The trail data TrailBivvy derives from OpenStreetMap is available under the ODbL on request.
Terrain Tiles on AWS (Mapzen/Nextzen) — elevation of catalogue trails, built from SRTM, GMTED2010, 3DEP, ETOPO1, EU-DEM, ArcticDEM and national elevation models (registry.opendata.aws/terrain-tiles).

For a few countries, for example Croatia and Greece, the rule summaries rest on secondary sources that are to be replaced by the official texts before release. Summaries are not legal advice.
Demo data — the Via Alpina demo route, its sample places and sample rules are synthetic data by TrailBivvy, labelled “Demo data” in the app and not for navigation.

This website uses no third-party code, fonts or images; it uses your device’s own system fonts. It sets no cookies and loads nothing from other websites. It is hosted on Cloudflare Pages (Cloudflare, Inc.). See the privacy policy for details.
